Private/Professional Disability Policies
Business owners or professionals are more likely to have purchased an insurance policy directly from an insurance company than be part of a group disability policy or plan. This might be done directly with an insurer or through an insurance broker or brokerage. Many professional associations such as OMA or OVMA have group plans which have features reminiscent of individual plans even though they are technically group plans.
SISIP Claims
The Social Income Security Insurance Plan or “SISIP” is the insurance plan that covers members of the Canadian Armed Forces. The plan is a group insurance plan administered at present by SISIP Financial with Manulife Financial, as the current insurance provider.
Long COVID Claims
When a disability is not visible or detectable, there is a tendency to diminish the severity of that disability and the significant impact it has on an individual’s ability to function.
It is easier for insurance companies to deny or terminate claims where the level of severity of impairment cannot be measured on standardized testing or where a definitive diagnosis cannot be provided.
Critical Illness Claims
Unlike disability benefits claims, in many critical illness policies the analysis of whether the specific policy criteria are met is determined at the point at which diagnosis was made rather than on an ongoing basis.
As such, it is possible to have a viable critical illness claim even if you have recovered fully from your illness, and you are not impaired in any way.
OTIP Claims
Teachers and support staff in Ontario may be entitled to coverage under the Trustees of the Ontario Insurance Plan (“OTIP”). As of January 1, 2020, the Trustees of the Ontario Teachers Insurance Plan (OTIP) assumed management of the long-term disability benefits plan which was previously insured under Manulife Financial. The plan is now self-insured which means benefits are paid for and managed by OTIP.
